Ask an Archaeologist

We count on the public to help us learn more about the City’s past, and we are happy to try to assist with any New Orleans archaeology-related questions you might have. If you have found an unusual artifact, you may submit photographs or other information here. In addition, if you think that an archaeological site may be located on property that you own, or that a sensitive site is being impacted by construction, please let us know. Remember that the preferred option is for archaeological materials to be left in place unless they are in danger of destruction. Artifacts and other archaeological materials found on state and federal lands are legally protected; in all cases, it is illegal to dig on someone else’s property to remove artifacts without permission. To submit, please go to our instagram and submit items with the hashtag @askanarchaeologist. We will be in contact to follow up within a week of your submission, and we may ask if you would consent to share the photographs, maps, or other documentation to this website.

Terms and Conditions

By contributing to this website, you are agreeing to have your submission made available online and catalogued in the UNO Archives and Special Collections if selected. You will retain full copyright over your submission. Federal law protects archaeological sites and artifacts on federal lands. Additionally, we will not accept or display on our website any artifact removed from any property without the expressed permission of the land owner.
