What About Human Remains?
What do I do if I think I’ve found human remains?
While it is not common, and often non-human bones are mistaken for human remains, there is a possibility that unmarked burials and/or cemeteries may be encountered in some parts of the city. If you think you have found human remains on your property, the most important thing to do is leave them in place until a professional can evaluate them. If human remains are present, local law enforcement and/or the Orleans Parish Coroner will have to determine whether or not they represent a recent crime scene. If they do not, then the Louisiana Division of Archaeology and other qualified professionals will help to determine who else should be consulted for the respectful treatment of any human remains present. You can read more about the procedures for dealing with human remains at the website of the Louisiana Division of Archaeology.
