UNO ARC and the Heritage Management Hub
UNO has long housed archaeological collections from the City of New Orleans and surrounding area in Milneburg Hall and the Liberal Arts building on the UNO campus. With a combination of grant funding, external contracts, and donor support, we are pleased to announce the construction of a new archaeological research and curation facility on the second floor of UNO’s Earl K. Long Library.
When completed, the new facility will include a reading room with built-in display areas and space in which students and the public can access UNO’s curated archaeological collections. It will also include over 6000 sq feet of curation space for the storage of archaeological collections and records, along with a new work room and lab processing area for students and volunteers.
This facility will be part of the UNO Heritage Management and Preservation Hub, which will expand the capacity of the Library’s Innovation Lab and other computer labs, with new equipment and software devoted to technologies like photogrammetry, digital modeling, mapping, and 3D printing. The UNO Heritage Management and Preservation Hub will both support the University’s educational mission and provide a valuable service to the city and community.
The Hub will establish UNO as one of the most important repositories for archaeological collections in the region, while providing unique opportunities for students and the public to view and work with these nationally significant collections. Funding for the Hub is coming from a variety of sources, including a Louisiana Board of Regents Departmental Enhancement Grant, awarded for 2024-2025, and external grants and contracts.
