Earthenware Pipe and Contents from Burial 16

Burial 16 was interred with an earthenware pipe packed with items.

The pipe is a hand-built- low-fired earthenware example with a sandy temper and a globular bowl, meant to hold a reed stem.  The bowl has a small lip, with a line of pecked/lightly incised decoration running just beneath it around the circumference of the opening.  Three more lines of similar pecked/incised marks encircle the base of the bowl, running just above the base-stem junction.  Somewhat similar globular clay pipes have been speculated to be a colono-type ware, representing a combination of Native and African influence, and they have analogs in both cultural milieus.
