Pipe Contents: Tooth

Tooth from the earthenware pipe from the interior of Burial #16 coffin.

The age and interment date for the individual in Burial #16 make it difficult to determine with certainty whether he was born in Africa or the Americas, or whether he was chiefly of West or Central African ancestry.  It is unfortunate that the small mammal incisor could not be identified, as it is tempting to see this object as something that might have been curated as a material linkage to the place of the individual’s birth.  It was the sort of object that could be easily concealed and thus retained even through the intentional stripping away of material markers of identity during the Middle Passage.
