Reburial

Reburial of the human remains recovered in 2011 was planned from the beginning of the project, but it was unclear what form this would take.  The ones from 1984 had been placed in a vault in St. Louis #1, but with no marker or public ceremony.  Once it was determined that many of the individuals from 2011 were likely of African descent, archaeologists reached out to St. Augustine Catholic Church in the TremĂ© as a natural choice around which to plan the ceremonies, both for its long association with New Orleans’ communities of color and its traditions of activism in the present.
